Helloooooo Kuching!

The man who placed George Town on the world festival map is now taking his crazy brand of style and fun to Borneo.

Joe Sidek, the director of the George Town Festival wants Kuching to rock on the fringes of the internationally-acclaimed Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) in July.

He is curating and presenting the Rainforest Fringe Festival (RFF) and promises it to be a 10-day (7-16 July) spectacle of the best which Sarawak has to offer by way of art, food, fashion and music. 

“The festival happens right in the bustling capital town of Kuching in Sarawak and will provide the ultimate lead up to the annual Rainforest World Music Festival. 

“The inaugural Rainforest Fringe Festival will also give prominence to Sarawak’s rich indigenous arts and culture, giving festival goers a true sense of the beauty and energy of the state, its people and rainforest,” says Joe.

Festival-goers will rediscover Sarawak through film screenings, fashion showcases, photography exhibitions, art and craft bazaars and other displays of Sarawak’s highly underrated trove of local talents.

The Old Court House in Kuching will serve as the venue for most events – such as a craft and vintage market, talks, exhibitions and various movie screenings – tied to the fringe festival.
The “Sarawak: Theatre of Clothes” fashion gala will showcase exceptional and multi-talented fashion and accessories’ designers originating from Sarawak.

In upholding their Sarawakian roots, these designers such as Datuk Tom Abang Saudi, Eric Ong, Ramsay Ong, Tanoti and Neng Kho Razali have made their mark on local and international high fashion runaways and will bring to the festival, their show-stopping works.

A special fashion treat awaiting those coming to the fringe festival would be Singapore-based contemporary womenswear label Ong Shunmugam. The label owner is Malaysian-born Priscilla Shunmugam, whose work is designed and made across Asia and offers ready-to-wear ranges and bespoke designs. She is working with `Pua Kumbu’ the traditional patterned multi-coloured ceremonial cloth used by the Ibans and in Sarawak for the fringe festival.

“Music is the way nature speaks to us. It is found in the splash of a waterfall, the rumble of the wind and the flutter of a bird’s wings …These are our music; it means Sada Kamek in the Iban language.”

The Rainforest Fringe Festival will open with an official concert `Sada Kamek’ at the Kuching Amphitheatre, with a line-up of Sarawak-born performers like Dayang Nurfaizah, Noh Salleh, Tony Eusoff, Nading Rhapsody, At Adau, Pete Kallang, Alena Murang and Matthew Ngau.

Cookie Bake-Off with Flex

They came, they baked and impressed the judges, their colleagues and all cookie monsters present! Forty Flex Penang employees comprising 20 teams rose to the challenge yesterday in displaying their baking prowess at making Hari Raya cookies. 

Left to concoct their own recipes or fall back on traditional festive ones, the teams did Flex proud by displaying so much love, joy and pride in what they were doing while having fun.


Stella, Faten and Joe had a field day sampling the bakers’ delights and Val conceded that every single team and their cheering supporters present were winners. The attention to detail, creativity and taste were amazing while Flex’s generosity in allowing the bakers to take home the Pensonic ovens and cake mixers and a host of other goodies are enough reason for it to remain employer of choice and have more employees asking for more corporate cooking events.


Pensonic’s abilities in organizing cooking events were put to the test and they emerged with flying colours and have proven that their corporate headquarters are more than just a place to view their products and impressive test kitchens, but also a spot to cook and have fun in.

It’s all in the butter

Prices may be up but when real butter is used in Christmas staples like Pineapple Jam Tarts, you can expect nothing but flaky and melt-in-your-mouth goodness.


Baking, cooking and roasting goddess T has been on her feet since the start of Advent making fruit cakes, cookies and tarts for friends and family to enjoy. 

Today a fresh batch of tarts were lovingly baked  and topped with homemade jam for a beloved aunt in George Town. The care package will make its way across the Penang Bridge to its lucky recipient this weekend.

Festive retail therapy

Pam has been busy in her kitchen preparing limited stocks of Mulled Wine Extract. All you need do is to just add to a bottle of red wine and heat gently for an instant taste and smell of Christmas! 

She has also carefully shopped for and curated festive items for the picking ranging from Scandi-styled wreaths, tree ornaments and free-standing decorations including unusual lights (battery operated for maximum flexibility).


A relaxed and friendly pre-Christmas get-together takes place tomorrow (Dec 8) at Pam’s shop from 10am to 7pm where you can enjoy a glass of mulled wine, while browsing the selection of tasteful gifts, decorations and seasonal goodies including traditional fruitcake, shortbread, German stollen & cookies, Christmas flavours from Scoops Ice Cream, hand-made chocolates and more!


Grab your shopping lists, cash (and credit cards) and head for 5.4 North (24 Lorong Kinta) in George Town tomorrow.

Nyonya Nibbles

They are up at the crack of dawn making Nyonya kuihs (cakes made by the Straits-born Peranakan Chinese) which are so fine and delectable. Located along the hard-to-park Burma Road, there is also mercifully a backdoor entrance to Li Er Cafe which fronts (!) the Pulau Tikus Market. An open kitchen offers visitors a first-hand look at how some of their childhood favourite eats are prepared.

Deep-fried Chinese crullers (Yu Char Kway or You Tiao) are being pressed and prepared from fresh dough for take-aways.

While my picks for the day were the Kuih Kosui (steamed in Chinese tea cups and rolled in desicated coconut) and Kuih Talam (twin-layered and also steamed in green and white),  the aromatic sambal ikan bilis which is served with the iconic Nasi Lemak, assails the senses and can go on record as having proven its weight in gold previously.

George Town

She has been a safe harbour to travellers for centuries, many of whom ended up calling her home and enjoying their days in the sun and being surrounded by water. Today she is a cosmopolitan city where travellers still fly, sail or drive in droves. While her silhouette has been altered greatly by man-made developments, she still has plenty to offer by way of experiences, panoramas and exquisite flavours. This is my George Town!img_6621

Christmas Countdown

As Christmas nears,  the reality of rising costs is likely to be felt when baking festive treats calls for high-quality staples. I have been reminded by many good bakers that one should never compromise on butter especially when making Sugee (or semolina) Cake and Jam Tarts. The brand of choice among the discerning is either Golden Churn or SCS Butter which in recent years, have both escalated in price. It would be interesting to see in the coming weeks if there will be substitutions or lower quality butter or margarine applied to time-tested recipes. I can safely say that Miss Cate my sugee cake sifu (teacher) will likely maintain her impeccable baking standards and continue showering us with her moist and buttery semolina delights this year.

Time-out in Tambun

Bukit Tambun on mainland Penang is only a 45-minute ride from George Town on a traffic-clear day. The drive to this fishing village is one which is akin to taking a chill pill. Swaying coconut trees, cool breezes and a laid-back way of life greet any stressed out person driving into the village. Defences are let down as one takes in the slip-slap of the waves while fishermen take off or return on their boats. The healthy and green mangroves also lend a sense of calm to the senses as one delves into fresh seafood offerings at the various eateries built on stilts.

The star dish of the day was the Crab Fried Rice recommended by Ed for my crustacean-loving friends.
