Beyond the Bylines: The Families Who Called Balai Berita Home

Aunty Josy’s obit in the NST 7/5/2015

For decades, the halls of Balai Berita and the NSTP at Jalan Riong in Kuala Lumpur (and the NST bureau in Penang) were more than just workplaces to members of our immediate and extended family—they were part of our shared heritage.

Across generations, family members served in both editorial and non-editorial roles, carrying not only the Emmanuel name but also the de Cruz, Lopez, Fernandez, Heng, Jessy & Morais bylines and name tags through the corridors of Malaysia’s leading newsroom.

My cousin William de Cruz’s latest tribute to his mother, Margarita de Cruz, (Aunty Josy and Godma to some of us) is more than a heartfelt farewell. It is a carefully crafted slice of history – crafted over a decade after her passing – preserving for future generations the life and legacy of a remarkable woman whose quiet influence left an indelible mark on those who knew her.

Some stories deserve to outlive us—and this is undoubtedly one of them.
